Growing capsicum in polyhouse - my experience

Same here. I see one more trend here is Ginger current wholsale rate is 100/-Kg. farmers started growing it like maze now(all maze fields this year is ginger). I see a nose dive in price in coming harvesting season. I am predcting 5-10/kg.

As chandra said, gourds, cowpea, Chayote Squash are 10-15/kg range (note all are wholesale rates) I have studied, these rates are dont fluctuate thruout the year.

!No offense Capsicum/ginger growers!

Prices have gone down for capsicum almost everywhere

This is bad.

Frustrating !!!

Frustrating… its just the beginning aman…
and export is something which is possible, but the main issue is quantity and quality. that is the main reason why i am in a hurry to expand and start a cold storage.
i have marketing contacts and supply my produce to buyers and places individual farmers cant even think about.
the only place i fall short is quantity.
now we are not traders, who earn living on this. we are individual farmers busy in our own lives.

i know of a group from pune who work together… think we spoke about them. i do plan to meet them in coming time to see if anything can be worked upon.

i think its time farmnest team should do something in this direction :stuck_out_tongue:

vvk

For one, I believe even at the rates we are talking about above, the crop should be quite profitable? Also, these trends are cyclical: price goes down - quantities fall - price increases - quantities grow… so no need to be frustrated IMHO. One should always estimate profit based on averages in farming.

Open to ideas on what we can do as farmnest community - pour in your ideas :sunglasses:

Today i harvested 1500 kg capsicum from my 1000sqmt plot and sold them at the rate of 16-20 rs/kg

And viks, how can we all contribute ? If you have problem in quantity for export purpose, why cant we all pool our resources and export our combined produce, as it is you are a great help to us whenever we have problems in capsicum, we all can produce a good export quality capsicum under your guidance and through our little knowledge gained till now.

What say ?

Aman

Chandra i feel these rates are profitable for people who have been doing this from quite some time and have recovered their investment on polyhouse earlier, then surely these rates can give a quite satisfactory profit, but for starting projects like ours can bring down the motivation level. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nahhhh, motivation level is still up because i see a good organic export market of these produce and this is just the starting i still have lots of crop to experiment and expand

Aman

Chandra,
profit is something that is different for everyone…

for someone even 1% is profit, for other greedy people like me, 10% is less.

about the price, the current rate are not profitable…
if i take my whole farming activities, and average out, Rs 21/kg is where i am at a no profit-no loss point.

if i take individual setup (3yr old) then i can live with Rs 8/kg. thats mainly because my fixed costs have reduced.
other day i was calculating, for a shadenet owner… even Rs 3/kg is doable…

so this all ultimately comes down to one point

vvk

1500 kgs ? first harvest ?? pretty good aman !

post pictures so we could have something exciting…
about exports… sure we can start…

now its just you and me… and what ? this is not something that can be done individually…
if we want quantity we should hire someone who runs around sourcing. cause its a full time job, and maybe have systems at place… thats when the traders come in picture. these guys can source 20 tons/day… thats where we fall behind, and thats what the traders charge us for.
common… lets accept it… selling isint an easy job… it takes a hustler to survive…

are you ready to do all that aman ?

vvk

the sun is literally sucking all my energy with a straw thru my head…

dont feel good :astonished:

Viks i am ready to do any amount of work, if their is profit i am on for it

Hiring a guy wont be a tough job, we can do it, train him, provide him a computer and an isd number and let him start talking to buyers.

If we get a good trade link, i am ready to expand my setup to 10-15 acres the next day. Plus your existing setup is itself great, you and me arent 2 we can be 1+1=11.

What say ?

Aman

Viks.

1500 kg is my first harvest from 1000 sqmt plot
My other plot is due for harvest tomorrow.

Will take pictures and post them here.

Aman

1 + 1 + 1 = 111

Hi All,
I am wondering if we can pull historical data of various commodity prices at various mandis in the country.
If we have it at hand its possible to predict future commodity prices .

Here phycology of farmers is, the moment some crop prices are at peak everyone start running for it and prices crash.
If we consider crop gesture period, prices, amount of land under cultivation it will help us to predict.

I think its possible to pull data from various government sites on how much land is under cultivation for a particular crop .
I have seen various district websites that provide data on land under cultivation (At least in maharashtra for past year) .

Sri,Vivek,
do you see ginger like trend in turmeric also ? I was thinking about ginger/turmeric in couple of acres (Jalgaon, maharashtra) but looks like now need to drop ginger plan.

Thanks & regards,
Prashant

Hello Viks and everyone

i am posting some latest pictures of my plants which seems a little odd to me, this things looks like its going to cover the whole crop within few days, do see the pictures and let me know what do you think about it ?

also, after the first flower to fruit conversion in my plot their are no new flowers growing on the plants. so basically, after my first harvest i have almost no flowers to convert to fruits. what do you think is the reason for this and how can this be rectified ?

Aman

Prashant,
i have data related to capsicum since after my very first harvest…
the market is getting better, but so have the fluctuations.
high prices are on the increasing trend, but then on the other hand, so is the area into cultivation.

i remember when i started off, there werent a single shadenet house and were roughly about 20-30 acres of PH arrund nasik. today theres more than thousands of acres into protected farming.

there are about 5-10 nurseries (seed germination), we have live data coming from these nurseries about the crops they have. my main focus is on tomorrow rather than yesterday.
the websites suggested are wonderful, but then there are limitations to them.

and i am not much into any other crop other than capsicum and a few other… cant really tell about ginger…

vvk

Hello

There is no website that provides information about how much area is growing what currently. That is what the government should move forward as well as regulate which areas should grow which crop for ease and profitable marketting.
Well, that is a job which is expected from our esteemed politicians, agri ministers who instead release newer and newer subsidies/freebies. If there is somewhere where data is maintained about who is doing what, then it is easier for the farmer to decide. Democracy is being taken for granted, so amount of control is essential for everyone to be happy.

One place where you can check is your local vegetable nursery person, you can ask him which seedlings have sold most, that way you will know what to grow next. We used to do here.

This is why things dont go as planned in agri ventures. And the reason why we switched over to dairy farming where the market and pricing is under watch.

Good luck guys with marketing your products, I hope you get best prices.

Nikhil

Aman,
I feel its mildew attack, better to act fast before whole crop goes.
There are earlier discussions on how to control mildew, you can check.
I lost my crop, so be very proactive to control,

Viks,
You should step in as doctor and help Aman. You talk about so many different chemicals that I have never heard of before, please share and enrich our knowledge as well.

Nikhil

Hello nikhil

Thanks for help, but are you sure this is powdery mildew ? Because i have seen its attack and it doesnt look like a fungus attack to me, maybe m wrong

Can someone step in and clarify this.

Though i will take a precautionary spray of mildew tomorrow as well

Thank you

Aman

hi Aman— this looks like thrips attack or leafcurl virus attack spread by pests
you may spray imidacloprid plus azadiractin— 2or 3 sprays will be required for full control of thrips and other pests.
If virus attack is confirmed —remove affeected pants to stop further spread.
now there are some organic products in the market which claim to control spread of virus diseases.
