My land is hilly and has slopes. Can you suggest what kind of fencing i could go in for? I was thinking of chain link attached to steel poles, but you say for slope land this may not work?

Hi,
I have farm in MH. I m a new farmer , land is family owned, nobody willing to do farming. I have decided that I will be doing farming now.
The fencing is all broken and and bisons keep attaching in that area. Hence have decided to go for a sturdy fencing first.
The area is approx 4 acre. Below estimate is received for fencing:
Material: 1.5 inches Iron angle + Tata barbed wire.
Angle height will be 8 ft out of which 1 ft will be buried. Fence height will br 7 feet above soil, holes will be made at 10 inches on the angle and 8 rounds of wire will be done. This to avoid wild boars entry also. Once fencing is done, i will do live fencing along with using thorny bushes to stop hares and other animals (will be using sagar gota ).
I have rec’d below estimate:
Tata barbed wire 72,000
Angles 86,751
Misc. 3,000
Labour. 94,500
Total around 260,000
Labour will include digging holes in land, making and poring concrete, cutting the angle and welding, making holes etc. I will not be buying concrete material.
Please let me know whether this looks ok. 10-15000 either way is fine but it should not be very far from reasonable.
Regards,
Sadhana
Congrats on your decision to start farming. To be honest, it is not easy.
The points that I observed from the quote are:
Hi
Thanks for your reply. I know it’s not easy, but determined to make it good… since I will not be dependant on farming for my daily needs, i think I will have enough patience…
Thanks for tip on fence. To be honest, i HV not yet met the right person who has done fencing… the guy who has given above 1st quotation has not worked on fencing so far… he is also banking on other team for actually erecting poles and pulling wire. So I HV eliminated this middleman and on lookout for the team who will do this work…
Thanks for your help.
Will post the final decision here and experience… This will help others who are in same boat asa me.
Did you succeed with Sagar Coat Fencing Plant–I seeded along the boundary–Some of them grow and I do not see some Growing --Whereas I tried KILUVAI (with branches, though ), it grew well
Any tips on Growing Sagarcoat will help as even a rat cannot enter the Farm --It is very thorny and protects Well
Hi
I HV heard contradictory reports on sagar gote. While everybody is sure that it’s great for live fence and even a rat cannot pass, some hv said that it’s not a good decision. Don’t know why…
We are planning for fencing of agriculture land of 9 acres which is around 35 kms from sangareddy .Planning to go for cement poles of 8 feet from ground with mesh fencing.Request to kindly provide the supplies or contractors for doing the job with cost details.
It is not viable, you will incur loss after few years. Think about stone pillars. or even you can go with live fence subject to the location, nature of threat etc.
Finally, i got my fencing done. Stone or cement poles were out of question… the farm was having wooden poles as fence whose life used to be around one year.
In our area we have troubles with bisons, hares and wild boars. One elephant is also visiting nearby area, it’s his trespassing route. It seems elephants have very good memory and so there are chances of their returning every year. The elephant didn’t cause any harm as such but when he crossed the farm, whatever came in his way got damaged.
Considering all these, we decided to go for iron fencing. The circumference of the 4 acre rectangular farm is 2100 feet, iron angles are placed at every 8 feet. 20 feet long, 2 inches angles were bought at Rs 43 per kg. 110 angles were bought, expense was Rs.120,500.
Since I am planning to grow vegetables, it was considered wise to have wire at a distance of half foot. Tata wire was used, costing Rs. 99,500.
Cement and grit worth Rs. 31,800 , transport Rs. 9500. Other than cement, nothing is available in my village and hence paid a lot for transportation during lockdown… Total labour was 40,300. The gate is still to be done, material is bought already. A few charges yet to be paid.
In all approx Rs 3.10 lakh is spent on the fence.
Congratulations Sadhana and Thanks for sharing the details. Could you please share some pictures of the fence you have laid. Especially covering the corner and a few middle poles/angles. So that I can get a better idea of how it has been done. Thanks in advance. You may share the pics here or e-mail (kumar.skumar at gmail) me. Thanks in advance. Have a good time ahead!
Can you please explain it’s economics including labour involved to cast . Is it suitable where the required no of poles is over 6000 no’s ?
With lesser price, go for non Tata for higher thickness of wire. Protect it with roller brush applicator red oxide and oil paint. Why waste for brand premium?
In my view, you have spent a lot for fending just 4 acres land.
Sadhana, which place is your farm located.
Wepro, yes its a lot.
But its very painful to see your crop being eaten overnight by wild animals…
When monkeys come, i can do nothing to monkeys. They came in a crowd of 20-25 and sat eating my chawli… and i kept watching… but i can protect against bisons, deers, boars, cows and buffellows using fence. Its one time expense which helps in next 10-15 years if you take good care.
If i an investing my time, energy and money then i must protect my farm. I have already accepted that 50% of my produce will be eaten by animals, birds, insects. I have no complaints because because without them I cannot grow anything… they too have a share in my farm.
But i need to protect the balance for myself and my family.
I am doing farming in amboli, sindhudurg, maharashtra. Its one of the highest rainfall areas in India and farming is very difficult due to heavy rains.
Sir, can you please help me where did you manage to get kiluai cuttings/plantings?
Please share more details.
Congratulations! Thank you for the detail costs. Gives a great insight for a newbie like me!
Hi All,
Do you know anyone around chitradurga-hiriyur who provides complete fencing solution?
