Tips to Reduce Feed Wastage When Raising 50 Broilers

Raising broilers can be a profitable venture, but one of the biggest challenges I faced when starting out was feed wastage. Feed is the single largest cost in broiler production, so every handful wasted is money lost. Over time, I’ve learned some practical ways to minimize feed wastage and maximize growth, especially when managing a flock of 50 broilers.

1. Choose the Right Feeders

Not all feeders are created equal. When I first started, I used open trays, and the birds would scratch, spill, and even poop in the feed. Switching to hanging or gravity feeders with narrow lips made a huge difference. These feeders reduce spillage and keep the feed cleaner.

Tip: Adjust the feeder height so it’s level with the birds’ backs. This makes it harder for them to scratch feed out.

2. Don’t Overfill the Feeders

It’s tempting to fill the feeders to the brim, but this often leads to more wastage. I now fill feeders with just enough feed for a few hours at a time, especially during the first few weeks. This way, the feed stays fresh and the birds don’t scatter it around.

3. Feed at Regular Intervals

Establishing a feeding schedule helps the birds develop a routine and reduces the urge to play with their food. I feed my broilers early in the morning and late in the afternoon. This also helps me monitor their consumption and adjust as needed.

4. Monitor and Adjust Feeder Space

For 50 broilers, ensure there’s enough feeder space so all birds can eat comfortably, but not so much that they can jump in and scratch. I use about 2-3 feeders for 50 birds, which seems to be the sweet spot.

5. Keep Feed Dry and Clean

Wet or moldy feed is not only wasted but can also harm your birds. Always store feed in a dry place and check feeders regularly for moisture or contamination.

6. Use the Right Feed for Each Stage

Broilers have different nutritional needs at each stage. Using the correct starter, grower, and finisher feeds ensures they eat efficiently and grow well. Overfeeding or using the wrong feed can lead to wastage and poor growth.

7. Observe Your Birds

Every flock is different. I make it a habit to watch how my birds eat. If I notice excessive spillage or certain birds dominating the feeders, I make adjustments. Sometimes, simply raising or lowering the feeder or adding another one can solve the problem.

A Quick Calculation Example

For 50 broilers, you’ll need to plan your feed carefully. On average, a broiler will consume about 4-5 kg of feed from day-old to market weight (6-8 weeks). That means for 50 birds, you’ll need around 200-250 kg of feed in total. Reducing wastage by just 10% can save you 20-25 kg of feed – that’s a significant cost saving!
