Can anyone suggest organic products to control pod borer in Chilli crop? Borers have developed resistance to most of the chemicals available in the market.
Raipur District, Chhattisgarh State.
Crop season weather is mostly hot and humid.
Location: Raipur District, Chhattisgarh
Weather Conditions: Hot and humid
Target Pest: Pod Borer (Helicoverpa armigera)
Challenge: Resistance to chemical pesticides
Selection of Powerful Natural Ingredients
Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE) 5% – Acts as an antifeedant and repellent.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) @ 1g/L – A microbial pesticide that kills caterpillars.
To control pod borer in chilli, use the below methods.
This includes preventive organic methods and also a chemical method if the insect attack has already happened.
Preventive Measures: Use 10 pheromone traps at the flower initiation stage and simultaneously spray Organic Neem Oil (25 ml) or Beauveria bassiana (50 ml) per 15 liters of water.
Note: Use organic inputs as a preventive measure. They do not work effectively after infestation.
Curative Measures: Since resistance has developed against most chemicals, use Simodis (18 ml per 15-liter pump). The active ingredient in Simodis is Isocycloseram, a new-generation molecule.
You can use Neem Seed Kernel Extract (5%) or neem oil (0.3–0.5%) regularly to reduce egg laying. For caterpillars, spray Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) or organic Spinosad, preferably in the evening. Since your area is hot and humid, Beauveria bassiana or Metarhizium anisopliae will also give good results.
None of neem or other biopesticide or other chemical formulations will work in long run as these pests will develop fast season and soil dependent gene mutation to develop resistance , due to the bad and greedy promotion and practice of monocroping ,
Im suggesting you a working option grow local garlic and turmeric in between 1_1_1 and add Andrographis paniculata ( is there as weed on most farms in humid soil).Don’t till or spray chemicals for 12 to 14 days after planting.Spray a.1:20 ratio of sour curd diluted in water with 2 gm of lime powder.
Monocropping is the biggest pest promoter in india fpr now with plant loosing bioreistance and these pests becoming bioresistant.
Technically speaking Helicoverpa armigera and Heliothis both do have a very limited role in enhancing the oleroresin type if infested in a limited way, so there are no clear pests in nature nor any “Organic” cure , its our greediness that intensifies some. Best wishes try on a small batch and revert.
