Infestation of Whiteflies on Tomato Plants

Hello

I have been noticing a serious issue with my tomato plants recently. Over the past couple of weeks, several of the leaves have started turning yellow, and some are curling up. Upon closer inspection, I’ve found numerous tiny whiteflies on the undersides of the leaves.

The plants seem to be weakening, and I’m worried this might impact the harvest. I’ve tried spraying neem oil as a natural remedy, but despite this, the infestation hasn’t subsided, and the plants continue to show signs of stress. :upside_down_face:

I’m also noticing a sticky residue on the leaves and the ground beneath the plants, which I believe could be honeydew excreted by the whiteflies. I’m concerned that the excess moisture might lead to fungal problems like sooty mold, which would only worsen the situation. The whiteflies are also affecting the nearby pepper plants, though not as severely as the tomatoes, so I’m hoping to address this issue before it spreads further to other crops.

I’d greatly appreciate any advice on controlling the whitefly infestation. Should I try stronger insecticides or stick with natural remedies? Is there a specific time of day when treatments work best? I’ve read that Pests and Problems - FarmNest India Farm Community introducing beneficial insects, like ladybugs or parasitic wasps, can help control the population, but I’m not sure how effective these methods are in a home garden. Any tips on preventing future outbreaks would also be extremely helpful.

Thank you! :slightly_smiling_face:

Neem incidentally did not have any benefits in my case. Getting rid of white flies will take time. Insectides are pretty effective. The insectides are different for winter & summer. Same medicine does not work year long.

I use something called vector in winter & bravo in summer.

Hi bro!
I can give you a tips for white fly. Control
Similar white fly infestation was noticed in tapioca, which was worst than the photo which you have shown. trials were inducted by reach stations at that time and they came up with a solution which was effective. You can try the same to tomato as well.
Spraying starch solution(cooked) on the white flies in a very diluted quantify…
How it works:?
The cooked starch mixed liquid sticks to the white fly wings gets dried in few minutes/ hour and they cannot move and falls down from the leaf and die. Starch solution dries and falls down as thin flakes.
One or two spray will clear the white fly
How to prepare starch solution?
Take maize starch and mix it with boiling water stir continuously till you get thick paste like solution.mow (after cooking starch) dilute it with water taken in the sprayer, with a very diluted ratio (spray water color is slightly white colored) which should not affect the spray or chock the nozzle
Spray and allow for one day see the difference and depending on the residual or left over white fly population u can go for next spray.
Try this and good luck!

Pest infestation happens because:

  1. Unhealthy seeds - Non Heirloom Seeds. This might be your case.
  2. Monocrop - same crop is grown side by side. The pests can see/smell the same crop in the line of sight. This might be your case too.
  3. Unhealthy Soil - The soil lacks organic content. This might be your case too.
Try growing 1 heirloom Tomato next to it… 99% nothing will happen to it. If anything happens to it… then it means the SOIL definitely lacks organic content.
