I would like to grow a jackfruit tree.

question: can it survive in ahmedabad climate?

any information would be highly appreciated.

It should be able to grow there.. it is quite versatile tree.. it can take on the chill as well as the humidity that south presents.. it will require some care during the first 2-3 years from the sun.. and watering in 3-4 days

ahmadabad can go up to 45 degrees centigrade in summer? can it survive that?thank you for your prompt reply.

They can grow it that temp but you need to take care of it for 4-5 years..

you need extreme precaution during the 1st to 2nd year.. provide 50% green shed, drape the root area with mulch, paint the trunk with chuna to avoid its cracking and maybe add local drip system

There is no humidity in a’bad for 8 months or so. humudity is present only in the monsoon.

Humidity is mainly required to retain water in the soil.. Thats why covering the root area with mulch reduces the water evaporation from the soil. You can plant it near the other trees to protect it from the dry winds.. You can also provide self watering system

Mostly you need to take care of it for 8-9 months for 3-4 years so that it can establish itself.. after that it would be able to face the heat and dryness on its own

In the website: Foliages, there are many types of jackfruit. which one do i buy?

There are 3 variety that would do well. All are recommended with bud pinching for 1st 2 years

  1. Vietnam Super Early- This variety gives fruits between March-July and then between Sept- Nov. The fruits are of 7-10kg weight.. As it by nature focuses on fast blooming, the trunk remains thin, so this required flowering pinching so that the trunk can develop more.
  2. Daeng Suriya- This tree produces fruits weighing 10-15 kg between Feb-May.. This tree thickens the truck faster than other 2.
  3. J33- This tree provide fruits weighing 20-25kg, between Feb-July.. This comes 2nd in Trunk growth.

Trunk growth is important in Jackfruit as it denotes how deep the roots have gone.. deeper they go, more the plant survive in dry condition. Also, if the trunk is weak and gets loaded with fruits, the dry winds can cause the branches to split.

In the monsoon, You can dress the ground basin with Bone Meal or Rock Phosphate alongside well-rotted cow dung. Phosphorus stimulates massive root expansions; the wider and deeper the root grid spreads into the ground, the faster the trunk will visibly widen.

There Water Basin technique that helps the root to go down wards rather than sideways, that can help too

Well its pick and choose now.. its recommended to keep 1st fruiting to 1-3 fruits only..

Id say go for Daeng Suriya and Vietnam Super Early…

If you plant them in sept 2026, Pinch D. Suriya’s buds for 1 year and let is undergo 1st fruiting in 18months( Say Feb-March 2028), that way the trunk will have more time to develop.. also pick the fruit at say 7-10 kg, so that the burden doesnt fall on the tree.. only choose fruits that are growing on the trunk. This will ensure that the trunk is around 4" when the fruiting happens

For Vietnam super early, you will have to wait for 3 years for 1st harvest
