Hi everyone !
I am gearing up for my next Project. [1.55 Acres of Food and Timber Forest]. I am sharing my idea with you all, as I am really hoping for other creative people to share their experience and feedback.
Breakup of Land use:
10 cents: Pond for Irrigation
5 cents: Wind break Trees[Mostly South Winds from Sea]
20 cents : Dedicated Miyawaki Forest [moisture and diversity]
20 cents: Fruit trees
30 cents: Open space and Vegetable/Tuber Crops Farming
70 cents for Timber Trees
My 2 Questions:
Does the land allocation look okay ? Timber is mostly for Commercial purpose, but it is a long term thing. Any suggestions for Inter cropping species to get short term cash flows?
Right now its a fallow rice field with no trees at all. So my query is regarding how to start this whole process. As in should I first go for planting the wind break species along the periphery and then wait for a few months to go for rest of the plantation ? Or should I put some artificial wind breaks [ Green Shade Mats/ Tarpoline] on south Side Periphery and then go all In ?
I must tell you that South Side Winds in Summer months can go as high as 15-20 km/hr, as this place is close to Sea [10 kms]. i plan to start in November End.
Your land allocation looks balanced for both short-term and long-term gains. Since timber trees are a long-term investment, intercropping with species that yield faster results can be beneficial. Some suggestions for short-term crops include legumes, vegetables, and tuber crops like sweet potatoes, which can also improve soil health for future timber growth.
As for starting the process, planting windbreak species first is advisable to protect the young crops from strong winds. Fast-growing windbreak trees like Casuarina or Eucalyptus could be ideal, and you can supplement with temporary windbreaks like shade mats for immediate protection. Given the wind speeds and proximity to the sea, establishing a strong natural barrier is key before moving forward with other plantations. Starting in November sounds good, as it will give enough time for the windbreak trees to establish roots before the intense summer winds arrive.
10 cents: Pond for Irrigation : OK Go ahead
5 cents: Wind break Trees[Mostly South Winds from Sea]:
I am suggesting Bamboo for wind breaking and will grow very Fast.
20 cents : Dedicated Miyawaki Forest [moisture and diversity] :
Instead I am suggesting Austrelian Teak.
20 cents: Fruit trees :
OK go ahead by including 1.Avakoda 2. Dragon fruit 3. Fashion Fruit
30 cents: Open space and Vegetable/Tuber Crops Farming : Go for Vegetables if your Farm is at less than 50 KM fom your Residence.
70 cents for Timber Trees : Go far Austrelian Teak

As far as my Experience in aforastion the Austrelian Teak is considered GOOD RESULTS while giving INCOME. Demand for Timber is increasing DAY by DAY

Not Necessary happily you can go for BAMBOO Plantation.
Breakup of Land use:
10 cents: Pond for Irrigation [Padmanabhan Ganesan] - Ok. Do you have any other water source? Confirm. If no other water source, its okay. Otherwise, try to avoid creating Pond as you have very less land.
5 cents: Wind break Trees[Mostly South Winds from Sea] [Padmanabhan Ganesan] - Create Miyawaki Forest of around 1 metre along borders of the Sea Side for Wind Breaks. As Miyawaki Forest grow very quickly, that too, in 3 years time. You can create the Miyawaki Forest as I mentioned here in all the sides of the fence only allocating 1 metre.
20 cents : Dedicated Miyawaki Forest [moisture and diversity] [Padmanabhan Ganesan] - Since Miyawaki Forest is already created in all the sides of the land, no extra space is required. My opinion.
20 cents: Fruit trees [Padmanabhan Ganesan] - SBNF or Miywaki Model is best suited for this or AgroForestry model combining with vegetable crops.
30 cents: Open space and Vegetable/Tuber Crops Farming [Padmanabhan Ganesan] - Unless you are able to market short term crops like Vegetables etc, it will be a huge load of work.
70 cents for Timber Trees [Padmanabhan Ganesan] - Combine Fruit trees and Timber Trees.
I like this idea of totally eliminating the Wind break layer, by just having the Miyawaki layer, however I read online that the minimum width for a miyawaki patch should be about 4 meters. But has any one experimented with this? Is Miyawaki forest doing well in places that receive rapid gusts of wind ?
