Possible cause: Looks like Root knot nematode Meloidogyne sp., but it appears such symptoms can be a result of multiple causes.

Go for nematode resistant variety.
Plant marigold as intercrop.
Solarize soil before next planting.
Incorporate Trichoderma in preplanting tillage with sufficient organic manure.
