The issue you’re facing with your bananas—blackening of the skin and reduced size—could be due to several factors, particularly related to the cold climate at your farm’s altitude. Here are some steps to help mitigate the problem:
- Cold Weather Protection:
Cold temperatures can cause banana skin to turn black. Since your farm is at 850 meters, it’s likely experiencing cooler nights.
Use mulchingaround the base of the banana plants to keep the roots warm.
You could also try covering the plants with frost clothsduring colder nights to protect them from low temperatures.
- Wind Protection:
Cold winds can also cause damage to bananas. Planting windbreaks like tall trees or installing barriers may help protect the banana plants from the cold.
- Watering:
Ensure that you’re not overwatering in the cold season. Overwatering combined with low temperatures can affect fruit development and quality.
- Soil and Nutrients:
Check the soil nutrient levels. Bananas need adequate potassium and phosphorus for good fruit size and quality.
Consider using fertilizers high in these nutrients during the fruiting season to support growth and fruit development.
- Banana Varieties:
Some banana varieties may be more susceptible to cold damage. If this issue persists, you could look into cold-hardy banana varieties suited to your altitude.
