Srinivas,
Mulching must aerate the soil. If there is no aeration roots cannot absorb water effeciently. I visited a farm last evening. He has a thick layer of coconut leaves, teak leaves, jack fruit leaves. The bio mass is almost 3" thick.
He also has a cover crop called “garaga” a local name. It is 6" tall harmless plant. It provides all season flower which is good for honey bees.
So try to have natural mulch as much as possible.

Does anyone know the english name of “garaga”? I am looking for more information about this cover crop. Thank you.
